¹ It was Plato who originally suggested that the mind was separated into two parts: a rational, logical part and an emotional part. ² He argued that when making decisions we should try to use the rational part of the mind and keep our emotions under control. ³ He thought that emotions were a negative influence when making decisions. ⁴ Despite being accepted for thousands of years, recent work by scientists has come to some very different conclusions that require us to rethink our Platonic decision-making model.

when の直後に現在分詞が続く場合, 通例 <主語 + be動詞> を補って解釈します (when we were making decisions) が, 結果として生じる進行形 (be doing) が不適に思えるときは, 現在分詞を現在形または過去形に直して解釈します (when we make[made] decisions)。第2・3文の when making decisions は when we made decisions と解釈します。過去形であるのは時制の一致によるものです。
